The Black Widow film will reveal what Loki's taunt on Natasha Romanoff really meant in The Avengers. After multiple delays, the Cate Shortland-directed film is finally hitting theaters this week. While its primary mission remains under the lid, MCU architect Kevin Feige reveals some information about what to expect from it.

Originally set to kick-off Phase 4, Nat's solo film was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic which forced the closure of theaters and banned any public gatherings for a period of time. But now that the global health crisis seems to be showing signs of improvement, Black Widow is gearing up for a hybrid release in theaters and Disney+. Set after Captain America: Civil War, it's Scarlett Johansson's send-off project after the founding hero met her end in Avengers: Endgame. The period piece will introduce her Russian family composed of David Harbour's Alexei Shoskatov/Red Guardian, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, and Rachel Weisz's Melina. Together, they will deal with an unfinished business that has yet to be revealed.

For Nat, personally, however, Black Widow will also tackle her history before becoming Nick Fury's S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and eventually, an Avenger. During the red carpet event for the upcoming blockbuster, Feige even told On The Red Carpet that the standalone project will reveal what Loki's comments about Nat's red ledger in The Avengers were really all about.

"When you have a character like Natasha Romanoff, who has been in the MCU for over ten years, almost everything is an Easter egg. Almost every line, every story point, has been referenced before. Particularly, there's a scene in Avengers, where Loki is behind glass on the Heli-Carrier and he's taunting Natasha with things. A lot of things that he taunts her with are things from her past that we didn't know about, that we learn and see first-hand in this movie."

For more context, the interaction that Feige is talking about is Loki listing down what sounds like Nat's worst missions before joining the Avengers. He talked about Dreykov's daughter, São Paulo, and the hospital fire. Despite ultimately being a ruse to let Loki talk, it doesn't mean that Nat wasn't genuinely horrified being reminded of these incidents. In the Black Widow marketing, it's clear that she has a lot of remorse for her actions before becoming a hero. Then again, it's not like she was inherently bad; she was trained to be an assassin and she was simply carrying out orders. The fact that she's haunted by her past self is a testament to her core principles as a person.

While it's been several years since MCU's first ensemble project, Marvel Studios' current projects are revisiting that particular time period. Aside from Black Widow further tackling Nat's conversation with the God of Mischief in The Avengers, the Loki show features the version of the Asgardian Prince who's fresh off his defeat in the Battle of New York. There's a slim chance that there's actually a significant narrative connection between the upcoming film and the ongoing Disney+ series since they tackle very different stories. But, it interesting that schedule-wise, they lined up.
